MARIPOSA, Leadership and Empowering Program promotes advocacy and skills development using a cultural sensitive approach to promote leadership, self-esteem, and health messages to Latinas ages 11 to 17. Cultural relevant information will be delivery in the language(s) that Latino youths understand paying special attention to traditions, changing cultures norms and Latino culture values. The proposal embraces the inclusion of parents and friends during the meetings to create a more relevant and effective program for the intended audience. Tailored to Latinas promotes open communication, as well as, learning conflict resolution and refusal skills.
The mission is to empower young Latinas to strive both in school and in life by providing appropriate programs for them and their love one in a place where they feel safe with adequate role models.
MARIPOSA Program promotes female empowerment and encourages Latinas to set life goals in a context of free of violence, abuse, discrimination and fear. It also, provides a space for young Latinas to learn about different mechanisms that they can use to changing topics such as, racism, violence and other topics taboo in their community. MARIPOSA seek to empower our Latina youths with leaderships skills so they can find their voice and share their ideas and work collectively with others to change the issues in their communities.
MARIPOSA is a series of structured workshops and group activities that focus on youth leadership and personal empowerment, financial literacy, stress management reduction using yoga, self-defense techniques, domestic violence awareness, conflict negotiation and refusal skills, career path discovery, self-esteem and cultural awareness activities. The program kicks-off with an interactive and dynamic family dinner, followed by weekly meetings, one hour sessions focusing on a different topic every month for six months. Finally, the program will conclude with a show and family celebration.
