Princesas & Princesitas (P&P) is a unique and cultural appropriate series of 6 gatherings for mothers and daughters, ages 8 to 16 yrs. old. Princesas & Princesitas (Princess and little Princess) will provide tools for better communication, help Latino mothers & daughters achieve their goals, thrive when challenges arrive in their lives, connect them with resources and empowered mothers & daughters to become ambassadors in our community and in their schools. The atmosphere of love, respect and learning will open the door to topics that they reported to feel uncomfortable to discuss at home.

Princesas & Princesitas emphasis on respect, understanding, age & cultural appropriate activities.Madre Latina (ML) strongly believes that Latina mothers are their daughters' most influential role models in life and that a strong mother-daughter relationship can promote healthy development for both parties. However, none of this possible without regular, positive mother-daughter communication.

Princesas & Princesitas (P&P) program is culturally appropriate for our community with proper resources and educational tools to increase the intergenerational communication. This program will support Latino mother-daughter relationships in order to prevent depression & risky behavior among young Latinas. This is the only mother-daughter program helping Latinas to navigate their conflicts with the support of the community. We understand the importance of family and to decrease conflict we will welcome them in an environment where they feel safe, cultural appreciate, inclusive and with resources that are linked to help them.

WH AT IS THE ISSUE?

Madre Latina (ML) will address three interrelated but separate problems facing Latina mothers and their adolescent aged daughters:

·       First, Latina mothers and daughters have reported feeling very uncomfortable communicating with each other on critical yet sensitive topics, such as sex, domestic violence, depression, and applying for college. The lack of intergenerational communication weakens: (a) the mother-daughter relationship, and (b) the level of maternal support and guidance mothers can provide their daughters during adolescence, a critical developmental period.

·       Second, Latina mothers perceive low access to school resources for support. These mothers desperately want to ask schools for resources that could help them support their daughters academically and emotionally, such as information on the college admissions process, financial aid, or mental health counseling. A recent survey, however, suggests that 75% of 300 Latina mothers reported obstacles that kept them from accessing resources from schools, such as a lack of school personnel who could understand Latino families' language, culture, and family dynamics.

·       Third, there are no community programs in Waterbury that support the strengthening of Latina mother- daughter relationships. While there are numerous programs for youth, they are not culturally tailored for the Latino culture and do not include both mothers and daughters—which is crucial for developing intergenerational communication in Latino families.

Madre Latina (ML) strongly believes that Latina mothers are their daughters' most influential role models in life, and that a strong mother-daughter relationship can promote healthy development for both parties. However, none of this possible without regular, positive mother-daughter communication.
